A lavishly illustrated collection of interviews with ten artists, the book juxtaposes their reflections on faith and art with full-color reproductions of their work. As regular readers of Re:generation know, James Romaine, our contributing editor for visual arts, has a knack for making unexpected connections, and this book from the tiny upstart publishing house Square Halo Books makes faith and art both illuminating and inviting. What follows is an excerpt from the book's interview with artists Tim Rollins, Robert Branch, and Nelson Ricardo Savinon. -The Editors

James Romaine: Your work is the result of a collaborative process between Tim and K.O.S. (which stands for "Kids of Survival"). Who is K.O.S.?

Tim Rollins: Around 1980, I was invited to start an art program for special education students at Junior High School #52 on Kelly Street in the South Bronx. I was young, energetic, enthusiastic, idealistic. I started out with this liberal, magnanimous attitude, you know, "Sure, I'll come up from downtown for two weeks and start this art curriculum for these poor ghetto kids"-a little patronizing and paternalistic. But, when I actually arrived and encountered these enthusiastic and talented young people, I ended up staying in that particular school for seven years teaching art full-time. While I left the public school system in 1987, this year K.O.S. and I are celebrating twenty years of art making and teaching in the South Bronx.
