The Biotech Century: Harnessing the Gene and Remaking the World, Jeremy Rifkin (J.P. Tarcher, 1999), 271 pp., $12.95. Rifkin voices concern about cloning and other genetic engineering projects and the pitfalls of their potential commercialization.

Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in Twenty-Three Chapters, Matt Ridley (HarperCollins, 2000), 344 pp., $26.00. In one chapter for each of humans' twenty-three chromosome pairs, Ridley provides a layman's explanation of the groundbreaking mapping of the human genome. This wide-ranging book ties art, science, and human history to the study of our DNA.

Out of Control: The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems, and the Economic World, Kevin Kelly (Perseus, 1995), 521 pp., $18.00. An endlessly provocative tour of life-like technologies-ones that grow, evolve, and might eventually not need us to survive-from the executive editor of Wired.
