Behind the Eyes by Amy Grant (Word, 1997)

Amy Grant may be the First Lady of Christian music, but she wants you to know that, deep down inside, she's not that different from the rest of us. Sure, she may play golf with the stars, hear her songs on pop radio, enjoy a zillion dollar recording contract, and have a fabulous farm and a pony, but beneath it all, she's the same as you and me.

Uh-huh. At least, that was my cynical first reaction on reading the advance kit for her brand new album, Behind the Eyes. But I should have known better. This is, after all, Amy we're talking about. And now that I've given the disc several spins, all I want to know, Amy, is when can we get together for mochachinos and talk?

Grant, in case you've somehow missed the past decade, has the distinction of being contemporary Christian music's single biggest export. There's something about her that clicks with listeners on both sides of the Zion curtain. It may be her voice. Or her song selection savvy (just try to shake the melodies of "Baby, Baby" or "House of Love"). Or that incredible hair. Whatever the reason, her last few albums have been so huge that Campus Life magazine dubbed her "The Chartbuster"—no mean feat for a performer squarely pegged as a Christian artist. Certain fans have carped that she's soft-peddled her faith as she's surfed the mainstream, but the complaint seems moot when you realize that as far as the rock establishment is concerned, Grant remains Gospel's girl.
