"What is truth?" Pilate's question to Jesus is our question, the question that haunts the rising generation of Christians. Like Pilate, some of us are ambivalent to questions of ultimate truth. Worried about a job–as Pilate was–or disillusioned by families or churches, the claims made by a controversial, itinerant preacher almost 2,000 years ago seem increasingly distant to our own lives. To others in our midst, Jesus Christ is real but the received answers offered by our confessional, cultural, and political traditions seem increasingly surreal. In a word, ambivalence is the watchword for many Christian members of the rising generation, the so-called Generation X.
As a new journal offered by Christians of the rising generation for thoughtful Christians of every age, Regeneration Quarterly (RQ) sees promise and peril in this generational ambivalence. On the one hand, our ambivalence fuels a flexibility of mind and spirit that makes Christians from the rising generation willing and interested in entertaining ideas that may not fit into traditional political or theological categories. Thus RQ is committed to representing fresh and provocative voices on the important issues of the day. In our pages, don't be surprised to find evangelicals giving feminism a chance, conservatives lamenting the rise of the Christian Coalition, or mainline Protestants lauding the moral vision of Pope John Paul II.
On the other hand, we are also aware of the dangers associated with ambivalence. We should not be ambivalent to ultimate claims, lest we end up like Pilate, washing our hands of that which truly matters. Ambivalence should be a way station. ...
