A Video Game with Redeeming Value
If a church wants to minister at a county fair, how can it attract passersby tastefully?
One answer: Use a computer game. "Maze to Heaven" was the name of the program Jeff Glover, a high school junior, wrote for the booth run by Trade Lake Baptist Church, Frederic, Wisconsin. Using multiple-choice questions supplied by his pastor, Glover created a little man who traveled down a road and faced a question about salvation at each intersection. If the player gave the correct answer, the character on the screen made progress. An incorrect answer meant running down a dead end.
"We drew a lot of traffic during the three days of the fair," says Pastor Dale Cope. "It was interesting to watch people's expressions as they found out what the Bible really said." Opportunities for personal witness came naturally as Trade Lake members at the booth struck up conversations with game players.
"This project became an enjoyable and effective way to share the Good News with a computer-curious culture," reports the pastor.
