Ministering to the Unborn
The cradle roll usually isn't geared to outreach. Most church nurseries are content to accept whatever babies happen to show up.
But not at Gethsemane Church of God in Christ, Lafayette, Louisiana. Essie Johnson, director of Christian education, decided to give the ministry of the cradle roll an early start.
Now, cradle roll workers pay a visit as soon as they find out a woman is expecting.
"Since the workers are mothers themselves, they're able to share the parents' anticipation and joy," says Johnson. "And they're able to offer help, especially to first-time mothers."
Shortly before the mother's delivery date, the workers make another call, this time praying with her for God's blessing as she goes to the hospital.
"We call it our ministry to the unborn," Johnson says. "But the parents appreciate the church supporting them during this special time. And the church benefits because we've built a bridge between parents and the nursery staff. This way moms don't worry about leaving their infants with strangers."
