An Early Start on Ministry
Someone is always missing from the junior Sunday school class at Cedar Road Missionary Church, Osceola, Indiana. On purpose.
Diane Howard, minister of Christian education, has decided that fourth grade is old enough to have a regular post of service in the church. Thus, "I've added ministry to my junior curriculum," she says.
The assignment: to be a helper in the twos-and-threes room for an hour every sixth Sunday. One junior helps during Sunday school, another during the worship service, so that a dozen students are involved overall.
"We've been doing this for two years now," says Howard, "and the kids honestly enjoy it. They've told me they feel like the church is more 'theirs' because of this opportunity to put into practice what they've learned in Sunday school. I even have third-graders anxious for their chance to come."
The juniors maintain the rotation and find their own substitutes if they need to be absent. They've also shown extra initiative along the way by suggesting and sponsoring two Easter egg hunts for the nursery and beginner children.
