Story Time Any Time
As any parent knows who's let little Billy talk long-distance to Grandma, children love the telephone.
For three years. North Avenue Alliance Church in Burlington, Vermont, has taken advantage of children's fascination with the phone to teach them about God, salvation, and Christian living. By dialing 863-2579, children hear Tele-Stories—a recorded Bible story, devotional message, or missionary adventure read by North Avenue member Anne Blodgett.
At the close of the story, Blodgett gives her own phone number for any children who would like to hear more about Christ or sign up for Bible correspondence lessons.
"Tele-Stories gets 300-400 calls each week," says Blodgett. "Children love to dial the telephone, and they respond to their own special number."
Approximately 50 children are currently taking the Bible lessons, which come from the Mailbox Club of Valdosta, Georgia, for three age levels: kindergarten to grade 3, grades 4-6, and grade 7 and above.
After children complete one lesson Blodgett mails them the next.
"Most of the lessons go to children who are unchurched," she says.
One young man, a Catholic, completed all 40 of the upper age level lessons. After the last one, he wrote in, "I didn't know the Bible was so interesting, or the fact that Jesus is coming again."
One of the lessons asks children if they have ever accepted Jesus, and if so, when? Blodgett happily reports, "Several have written, 'When I read this lesson.' "
