Say It with Love and Helium
How can children show their love to a leader who's ill, when the hospital rules won't let them past the front desk?
That was the problem at First Christian Church (Disciples) of Liberal, Kansas, last year when the much-loved sponsor of the acolyte program ended up in the hospital. The concerned 9- and 10-year-olds were not at all interested in sending just a plant or a get-well card.
They had a better idea: How about balloons? What could be happier or more cheerful?
"So the kids had 40 balloons filled with helium," says Patsie S. Moore, director of Christian education, "which they transported in the church van with much fanfare—to the hospital grounds. Since their sponsor was in a first-floor room, they were able to stuff them one at a time through his small window!"
"I received the balloons on the inside and tied them to the foot of the bed."
"It's hard to say who was most pleased—the children grinning through the window, the man lying in his hospital bed, or the scores of nurses and other patients who immediately began visiting the room to enjoy this unique message of love."
