Recent appointments, deaths and other transitions in the Christian world.



Elected Mark Rutland, as president of Oral Roberts University. Rutland, former president of Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida, will start in July 2009, filling the void left by Richard Roberts, who resigned in November 2007 amid charges of financial wrongdoing.

Died Millard Fuller, cofounder of Habitat for Humanity, which has built 300,000 homes for the poor since 1976, on February 3 in Americus, Georgia. He was 74.

Died Ruth Clokey, producer of the 1960s stop-motion television series Davey and Goliath, on December 28 from Alzheimer's disease. She was 85.

Appointed Joshua DuBois, the 26-year-old Pentecostal minister who ran religious outreach for the Obama campaign, as head of the White House's new office of faith-based programs.

Died Hua Zaichen, a Chinese Christian activist known for helping persecuted Christians, on February 9 in Beijing shortly after his 79-year-old wife, Shuang Shuying, was released from two years in prison. He was 91.

Resigned John Palmer, general secretary of the General Council of the Assemblies of God, on February 13 after confessing to misconduct. He had been general secretary since 2007.

Elected Timothy Tennent, as president of Asbury Theological Seminary. Tennent, 49, was previously professor of world missions at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

Stepping Down Elisa Morgan, as longtime CEO of MOPS Interational, a Denver-based ministry to 110,000 mothers of preschoolers. Current president Naomi Cramer Overton will take over for Morgan on April 1.

Appointed Robert Frank, as CEO of Bible League, one of the world's largest Bible placement agencies. A veteran manager of global companies, Frank will lead the group's campaign to engage 100 million worldwide in Bible study by 2020.
