The Wild Thing



What is a poor, struggling follower of Christ supposed to do in a world that constantly bombards us with sex? Advertising shows us that sex will make us healthy, wealthy, and wise. Pop culture croons that nothin's wrong with a little bump and grind-and shows us exactly how to do it. Peers tell us that it's the greatest thing since flavored coffee (again the sex and coffee connection). What are we singles supposed to do? Remain abstinent? Well,... yes.

Unfortunately, the church comes across like a Puritan caricature that says just say no and offers "because I said so" as the reason. Some of the examples of chastity the church provides are anything but. As carnal creatures, our hormones start raging from our early teenage years, often given expression by playing doctor or ogling over pictures. It's easy to understand why people got married young in biblical times. But in today's world, we need more than Dr. Dobson yelling at the school nurse for handing out condoms or the Pope recommending the reinstitution of the chastity belt.

The allure of sex is strong. It's attractive. God created it that way, as one of the most powerful forms of communicating intimacy and love. We need to treat it as such and respect the fact that it occupies a great deal of thought for many of us. But as with many things, sex is prone to abuse. The beautiful expression of love that God gave us is now degraded as a commonality on a Saturday night after a few drinks with someone who looks good but matters little.

Our culture misses the truth. Sex is like the kingdom of heaven, a treasure hidden in a field or a pearl of great value, for which you give up everything (Matt. 13:44-45). In the long run, it is worth sacrificing the cheap thrills, or even the meaningful ...
