Something Missing?
Most of the issues your contributors deal with I have long since settled in my own mind, so I didn't think I would be writing to you-let the upcoming generation work these things out, etc. Your summer issue dealt faithfully with the issue of sexuality; most of the thoughts were true to a Bible view of sex and fruitfulness, but I do have some concerns about Gonzalez's article ("Exploding Ex-Gay Myths"). His exposure of the failings of the "ex-gay" groups was certainly an eye-opener to me, but I did wonder at the absence of Leanne Payne and ministries like hers (e.g., Elijah House). Was this unintentional or deliberate? I would appreciate hearing his appraisal of these. Also, though his unmasking of the claims of ex-gay ministries was probably needed, he should have observed that the "integrationist" approach is largely an ill-concealed license for promiscuity, all the talk about "covenanting relationships" notwithstanding. I cannot suppress a comment with regard to correspondent Mark Henrie (Forum, RQ 1.3). The interested evangelical inquirers whom he would direct to Trent on "justification" would do well to examine at the same time the "Apology" of the Augsburg Confession and the Formula of Concord on the same doctrine. If these inquirers then still "have little quarrel with the official teaching of the Catholic Church" then indeed they are most of the way to communion with that group. Trent and Augsburg might both conceivably be wrong, but they cannot both be right, and they are certainly nowhere near each other.
