On any serious rock and roll connoisseur's list of the top ten bands of all time, you're sure to find King's X. They're not as well known as the Beatles and the Stones—their album sales generally top out around 200,000. But if you don't believe their fans, just ask the bands that have asked the Houston trio to open for them—Pearl Jam, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Metallica, the Scorpions, and others.

Once upon a time Ty Tabor, Doug Pinnick, and Jerry Gaskill were marginal players in the CCM world. They emerged in the late '80s with the kind of music you might expect if C. S. Lewis, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and AC/DC were thrown into a blender. Refusing to be marginalized in the happy land of CCM (actually, they were mercifully spared when the Frontline label turned them down), they made their stand in mainstream rock, where even those who disliked their spiritual lyrics were grudgingly forced to acknowledge their talent.

After being dropped by mainstream giant Atlantic, the threesome has moved to the independent label Metal Blade, coming out with not one, but three albums: a band effort and two solo efforts by frontmen Tabor and Pinnick.

Tape Head finds King's X in fine form, beginning with the pounding "Groove Machine" and hitting its stride with a stunning ballad called "Over And Over," which captures Doug Pinnick's amazing ability to take simple words and transform them into poetry through the sheer force of his vocal personality. "Higher Than God," about pride, is Tape Head's other standout, perhaps fueled by the experience of being dropped ...
