Like so many other universities, Yale used to be renowned for its religious leaders and passionate commitment to faith. There are cornerstones bearing testimony to Yale's Christian heritage on just about every major campus building—even commemorations of the founders of the Yale College Mission to China, who were martyred there. But today, less than 100 years later, Yale is at the forefront of modernity. Secular, proud, wealthy, and full of self-made people, the campus stands in stark contrast to the values espoused on its cornerstones and tombstones: "To the glory of God"; "Truth"; and "Light." In recent decades, Yale has forsaken the idea of training men in character and faith, focusing exclusively on providing an "education": a dismal vision, as Cardinal Newman would have been quick to point out. So we've got an alternative: the old school, outside class time. It's for men only; it costs time, energy, and money; and you're asked not to come unless you can commit fully to being there. Interested? Initially, the purpose behind our group was to get men together to debate the issues of ethics and leadership with personal application to our own lives. The point of this was twofold. First, some non-Christians actually felt free to join us in discussing what it means to "do right," thus creating opportunities for Christian guys to share their faith with seekers. Second, the group provided a way to integrate the really interesting debates of the day with our own lives, looking at ways in which we could personally become better men: more honorable, more Christlike in our actions and mindset, and more aware of the issues we faced.
